How You’ll Learn Guitar

I offer private guitar lessons for students both—in person in Grand Blanc, MI or online.

Learning guitar doesn’t have to be complicated. With clear guidance and regular practice, you can start playing songs and build your skills one step at a time.

My lessons are structured to give you a path forward, while adapting to your experience, interests, and goals. Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or building on skills you already have, we’ll work at a pace that helps you keep progressing.

A clear path to learning guitar

Play First.
Understand Second. Master Over Time.

Music is meant to be played, not just studied. That’s why my lessons focus on hands-on playing from the beginning, with new musical ideas introduced as you’re ready for them.

Play first. Get comfortable with the guitar and start making music.

Understand second. Learn why chords, rhythms, and songs work—not just how to memorize them.

Master over time. Build on what you know through practice and continue playing.

The goal is to make learning approachable while building a foundation you can keep developing.

What You’ll Learn

Learning guitar involves more than memorizing chords. You’ll develop the techniques, timing, and musical understanding that help you play songs and explore your own musical interests.

Guitar fundamentals
Get comfortable with your instrument, learn the strings, develop good playing habits, and coordinate both hands.

Chords and chord changes
Learn how chords work and practice moving between them. As you progress, you’ll build a set of chords you can use in many songs.

Rhythm and timing
Develop a steady sense of time and practice strumming patterns and rhythmic techniques that bring songs to life.

Reading guitar tabs
Learn to read tablature so you can follow where to place your fingers and how to play notes, riffs, and other techniques.

Songs and musical understanding
Put your skills into practice with songs and musical passages. As you progress, you’ll explore how chords relate to one another, how songs are put together, and how musical patterns can help you learn.

Skills beyond the basics
When you’re ready, lessons can include electric guitar techniques, the fretboard, scales, and lead guitar.

A Learning Path That Meets You Where You Are

If you’re a beginner, we’ll start with the fundamentals, build coordination, and work toward playing songs. You don’t need to read music or understand music theory before you begin.

If you’ve played before, lessons can build on the skills you already have and focus on the areas you want to strengthen. Everyone learns differently, so the pace and focus can change as you develop.

Learn Music You Enjoy

Playing music you know and love can make practice more meaningful. As your skills develop, we can work with songs and styles that interest you, from rock and acoustic music to classic songs and more.

Technique and understanding matter, and so does enjoying the process. Lessons should help you grow as a musician while keeping you connected to the reason you wanted to play.
